Russia’s Defence Ministry says the latest test of its new Bulava intercontinental missile in the White Sea has failed. The announcement comes after Norwegian authorities reported strange spiral lights seen in the arctic sky which sparked a wave of UFO frenzy. But the Russian Defence Ministry have not linked the two incidents.

Extensive repairs became necessary in the early 1990s, and since then the future of the Gardiner has been up in the air. Proposals to demolish it or move it underground as part of downtown waterfront revitalization efforts have been making headlines for some time.

Now there is a renewed interest to reinvent the Gardiner Expressway in a truly unique, and possibly impractical way.

In June 2009, Les Klein, a Toronto architect proposed a flexible alternative. Since the expressway opened in 1965, it has become a target of disdain, Klein said in a recent presentation. He now wants to elevate the Gardiner to a new plateau.

Kliens grand vision is to add an upper level deck covered with plants, bike lanes, walking paths and solar panels (for expressway lighting) on a seven kilometer stretch of the expressway, Entitled the ‘Green Ribbon’ the estimated cost is between $500 million to $800 million (CAD).

The Frederick G. Gardiner Expressway is a vital connection with its western suburbs. Running very close to the shore of Lake Ontario, it now extends from the junction of Highway 427 and the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) in the west to the foot of the Don Valley Parkway (DVP) in the east, just past the mouth of the Don River.

The six-lane section east of the Humber River was built in segments from 1955 until 1964 by the Metropolitan Toronto government with provincial highway funds. The ten-lane section west of the Humber was formerly part of the QEW provincial highway. The Gardiner Expressway is now wholly owned and operated by the City of Toronto.

Taken during December 22-27, 1996, the series of images show the Sun drifting in front of the stars of the constellation Sagittarius, as the constant solar wind blows outward in all directions. At the time of the observations, SOHO is looking towards the heart of the Milky Way Galaxy. The Milky Way, made by the light of billions of distant stars, forms a luminous band slanting down and to the right. Dark lanes seen in the Milky Way are real features familiar to astronomers. They are created by dust clouds in the disk of the galaxy that obscure the distant stars.

A doomed comet, previously unknown, enters on the left of the image on December 22. Its path curves towards the Sun and on December 23 it disappears behind the occulting mask of the coronagraph. It fails to reappear on the far side of the Sun. Whether or not its trajectory took it directly towards the visible surface, the comet must have evaporated in Sun’s atmosphere. It was one of a family of comets known as sungrazers, believed to be remnants of a large comet that broke up perhaps 900 years ago. Other fragments were responsible for spectacular comet apparitions in 1843, 1882 and 1965.

Finally, in an unrelated event, a plainly visible giant puff of solar gas is emitted, representing a large mass ejection in a direction away from the Earth. This mass ejection causes billions of tons of gas to race out into space on the right-hand (western) side of the Sun.
